Google, Facebook led private tech M&A activity in 2012 as companies spent $46.8b on over 2,200 deals

Publicly disclosed merger and acquisition activity for private tech companies reached $46.8 billion last year across 2,277 transactions, according to a new report from CB Insights.

The $46.8 billion figure comes from just 331 deals where the valuations were disclosed, as only 15% of transactions made the financial terms public.

Google and Facebook were the most active acquirers with 12 private acquisitions each. Five of Facebook?s deals were talent acquisitions, or ?acqui-hires?.

Interestingly, the bulk of acquired companies had not raised investment. 76% of private tech companies that were bought up last year had bootstrapped instead of turning to VCs.

As expected, California saw the most private tech M&A deals last year, more than the next five states combined. North Dakota was the only US state that didn?t host a private tech acquisition in 2012.?Internationally, the UK was the top acquirer, followed by Canada. India emerged as an up-and-comer at the third top international market.

Web and mobile commerce were the most popular types of companies to acquire, comprising 173 of overall deals.

Notable acquistions in 2012 included: Facebook purchasing of Instagram, Microsoft snatching up Yammer,?and Twitter acquiring Posterous.

An earlier report on the venture capital market found that?$28.3 billion in investments?had been made last year, down from $30.6 billion in 2011.

Blame Washington for the GDP Dip

Those Washington politicians think they're awfully important. Unfortunately, they're right.

The economy nose-dived during the last three months of 2012, with GDP shrinking by 0.1 percentage point, according to the latest government figures. That's the first time the economy shrank since 2009, during the final months of the recession. Most economists expected slow growth of 1 percent or so, but few predicted the size of the economy would actually decline.

One quarter of negative growth doesn't mean we're in a recession, and it's possible the discouraging GDP number could end up being revised higher, which happens sometimes. On the other hand, another quarter or two of such weak performance probably would signify a recession. More ominously, the forces that pushed down GDP at the end of 2012 are likely to intensify in 2013.

The big drag on growth in the fourth quarter was a 22 percent drop in defense spending. That fell because of the coming "sequester," a big set of spending cuts Congress first approved in 2011. The idea back then was to implement across-the-board spending cuts of about $110 billion per year, for 10 years, if Congress couldn't come up with a better way to start reducing the $16 trillion national debt. Congress couldn't, so those cuts were scheduled to go into effect starting Jan. 1, 2013.

The last-second fiscal cliff deal delayed those cuts by two months, giving Congress time to come up with a better plan. But defense agencies, not knowing what Congress would end up doing, apparently started to cut spending anyway late in 2012, anticipating that the cuts would go into effect. That makes sense, because you can't run complex, billion-dollar programs by simply turning off the flow of money as the calendar flips from one day to the next. Like any business, defense programs require extensive planning.

Congress, however, is making a rational spending strategy virtually impossible. What it ought to do is lay out a long-range plan for gradually reducing spending and fixing Washington's finances, with clear deadlines that allow for predictability. Instead, Washington is consumed with petty brinkmanship that is harming the economy in real, tangible ways.

President Barack Obama isn't helping either. He ought to lay out clear spending priorities that gives Congress a template to work from. Yet he's playing his own tactical games with Congressional Republicans, hoping to gain political leverage that will carry him through his second term.

Dallying on the national debt means Congress faces yet another deadline for those $110 billion worth of spending cuts. If they kick in on March 1, it would cut GDP growth by 0.7 percentage points, according to forecasting firm Macroeconomic Advisers. The economy's weak performance in the fourth quarter of 2012?which occurred before any spending cuts were actually legislated?suggests there could also be potent knock-on effects that damage the psyche of the markets and harm the economy even more.

There's a blithe assumption in Washington that as long as policymakers reach some kind of last-minute deal on every contentious matter, everything will turn out fine, with no net harm to economy. There's a pile of evidence that demonstrates how wrong that idea is. Political infighting has severely damaged trust in the U.S. government and harmed America's reputation. Global business leaders view it as increasingly risky to invest in the United States, largely because of manic policymaking (or no policymaking) that creates a needlessly turbulent business environment. In the latest survey of global competitiveness by the World Economic Forum, the United States ranked 41st in the quality of its institutions and 111th in macroeconomic stability. The world's model for democracy? Not any more.

There are signs that poor policymaking is already harming the economy in 2013. After rising for most of 2012, for example, consumer confidence has plunged so far this year, largely because of tax hikes that will reduce take-home pay for many Americans in the coming year. If the gloom persists, it will cut into spending, make businesses even more reluctant to hire and raise the risk of a recession.

Congress showed one flash of responsibility recently, by agreeing to temporarily extend the government's borrowing limit instead of forcing a destabilizing showdown and threatening default, just to make a point. Several more big decision points are coming soon, when politicians can either find a way to govern or cultivate friction and decline. The economy's recent performance suggests the odds are falling the wrong way.

Romani artist and Holocaust documenter Stojka dies

VIENNA (Reuters) - Romani artist Ceija Stojka, whose work helped expose the Nazis' persecution of the Romani people, died in a Vienna hospital on Monday aged 79, her publisher told the Austria Press Agency on Tuesday.

Holocaust survivor Stojka wrote one of the first Romani autobiographical accounts of Nazi persecution, the 1988 book "We Live in Seclusion: The Memories of a Romani", and dedicated decades to telling her people's story through music and art.

The Romani people, like the Jews, were sent to concentration camps by Germany's Nazis during the Second World War. Up to 1.5 million were murdered in an attempted genocide.

Austrian-born Stojka survived internment in the Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Ravensbrueck concentration camps, along with just five other members of her 200-strong family.

"I reached for the pen because I had to open myself, to scream," the activist said at an exhibition in Vienna's Jewish Museum in 2004.

The Budapest-based European Roma Cultural Foundation on Tuesday described Stojka as an "outstanding Austrian Romani woman ... and a key figure for the history, art and literature of Romani culture in Europe".

The foundation's executive director, Timea Junghaus, wrote in an email to Reuters: "She was a role model for the present generation and an inspiration for the future generations of Roma in Europe."

Stojka began painting at the age of 56, often using her fingers or toothpicks instead of brushes to apply acrylic paint and ink.

Her works, many of which are recreations of her experiences in the concentrations camps, have been described as "eerie" and "childlike" by viewers of her exhibitions around the world.

Romani people are still subject to forced assimilation or segregation, cultural repression, eviction and other forms of discrimination in many countries, especially in Europe.

The European Union estimates there are between 10 and 12 million Romani people in Europe, making them the continent's largest ethnic minority, although populations are hard to count, since many choose not to register their ethnic identity.

LONDON (AP) ? Lionel Messi's four-goal burst ensured that he and Barcelona returned to the top of the Associated Press Global Soccer rankings this week.

The romance of England's FA Cup produced some unlikely names in the Top 10 teams and a previously unknown striker at No. 9.

Thirteeen out of 18 panelists placed Messi at No. 1 on their list of Top 10 players, with Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo in second place after his hat trick. With 10 points for the top position, Messi earned 176 points, followed by Ronaldo with 159.

Sampdoria striker Mauro Icardi, a 19-year-old Argentine who is becoming a fixture in the AP Top 10 as one of the most promising players in European club soccer, was third with 90 points.

Icardi, a product of Barcelona's youth academy, scored four times in Sampdoria's 6-0 rout of Pescara in Serie A.

"The youngster from Rosario scored four times against Pescara and showed why Cesare Prandelli hopes to see him turn his back on his native country and represent the Italian national team," Leonardo Bertozzi of ESPN Brazil said.

Eurosport's Cedric Rouquette said the year has started just like the previous four with Messi slightly ahead of Ronaldo "at the summit of world football."

"Thrill of the week, however, was Icardi's four goals," Rouquette said. "Even if his goals were not technically difficult or inventive, a player needs superior talent to always be in the right place at the right time."

James Porteous of the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong also had Messi at the top and Ronaldo just behind.

"Just hours after Ronaldo scored his 19th hat trick for Real Madrid, Messi scored four against Osasuna as the world's two best players continued their remarkable scoring form," Porteous said.

Barcelona moved back into first place in the team rankings this week with 157 points, well clear of Real Madrid's 115. Bayern Munich was again in third place despite a successful Bundesliga season, with 11 points clear at the top.

Bayern earned 104 points, almost twice as many as fourth-place Borussia Dortmund. Manchester United was fifth with 57 points.

Napoli was in sixth place, and the next three slots are filled by teams with the unlikely names of Bradford, Luton and Oldham. All three lowly English clubs - Luton is not even in the Football League - overcame Premier League opposition in domestic cup competitions, beating Aston Villa, Norwich and Liverpool, respectively.

"My top 10 teams are dominated by lower league sides after a week of cup upsets in Britain," Porteous said. "Bradford kicked it off by reaching the League Cup final, while Luton, Oldham and Leeds were among those teams taking down Premier League opposition in the FA Cup."

Matt Smith, a 6-foot-7-inch forward, scored twice in Oldham's 3-2 victory over Liverpool and earned ninth place in the player poll, ahead of AC Milan striker Stephan El Shaarawy, whose consistent performances this season will likely give earn him a permanent place in the Italian national team.

"A couple of shout outs this week to lower, lower English players for goals in big FA Cup upsets," Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said. "Matt Smith's two goals against Liverpool deserve attention. This may well be the high point of Smith's career, and I salute it."

ROME (Reuters) - There is no doubt about the solidity of the Italian banking sector despite a scandal at troubled lender Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Italy's economy minister said on Tuesday.

"It is vital not to suggest that there is doubt about the stability of our banking system, because it is not true," Vittorio Grilli told a parliamentary committee. He said oversight of the bank had been adequate.

"The supervision of the Bank of Italy was appropriate, sustained and attentive and it intensified over time," Grilli told the committee.

In the winter, the powder is abundant. Park City is home to the steep mountains where the US Ski Team trains attracting the world?s top snow sport enthusiasts, and a very chic and sophisticated crowd.

The Utah Olympic Park near Park City was the site of the 2002 Bobsled, Luge and Ski Jumping competitions. Today, visitors are treated to a guided tour of the park, athlete training sessions, 70 mile-per-hour bobsled rides, zipline rides, Quicksilver alpine slide rides, Olympic museum, an interactive museum, freestyle aerial and ski jumping shows on Saturdays at noon and a variety of camps for all ages.

In the summer and fall, the resorts convert their lifts and runs into over 400 miles of trails for biking and hiking and endless activities. Deer Valley?s Mountain Biking School offers lessons for those looking to improve their skills or just a guide for some of the areas best trails.

Chris Brown reportedly in fight over parking

Police said they had not yet been in contact with Chris Brown.

Updated at 7:30 p.m. ET: Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown is being investigated following an alleged fight over a parking space in West Hollywood, police said early Monday.

Authorities responded to a call of a fight involving six males in Santa Monica Boulevard, the LA County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

"Deputies talked to witnesses who stated that Chris Brown and the victim were involved in an altercation over a parking space," the statement added. "The altercation allegedly led to Chris Brown punching the victim."

Brown had already left when officers arrived, police said.

The police say that according to witnesses, Brown punched R&B artist Frank Ocean in the fight. Steve Whitmore, the LA County Sheriff's spokesman, said that no charges have been filed against Brown yet, but that Ocean "is desirous of prosecution in this incident."

Police said they had not yet been in contact with Brown, and the singer's rep has not released a comment. No arrests have been made.
