Ex-ace Lincecum gives Giants stellar relief

By RONALD BLUM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:51 p.m. ET Oct. 27, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Banished to the bullpen, a two-time Cy Young Award winner has become baseball's most distinguished middle reliever.

His dark, stringy hair flopping onto his shoulders, Tim Lincecum was the ace of the staff when the Giants won the World Series two years ago for the first time since 1954.

Following his surprising season-long slump, San Francisco dropped Lincecum from its World Series rotation. Given the chance to pitch in relief, he threw 2 1-3 hitless innings Saturday night in a 2-0 win over the Detroit Tigers that moved the Giants into a 3-0 lead.

Lincecum has pitched 4 2-3 innings of hitless ball against the Tigers, striking out eight. He's faced 16 batters and just two have reached, on a walk and an error by shortstop Brandon Crawford.

"It is a little tough," Lincecum said before the Series began, "but I mean it's just all about being prepared for that next day or when you could get your name called."

Known for his high leg kick and unorthodox delivery, the diminutive Lincecum has simplified his mechanics during the postseason, jettisoning his windup and going solely from the stretch - even with no runners on base.

"It allows me to just think about one thing, and that's sight of the target," he said. "At times it can still get away for me and I can still think about the wrong things. But most of the times it works."

After winning the NL Cy Young Award in 2009 and `10, he slumped to 13-14 in 2011 and 10-15 with a 5.18 ERA this year, the highest among qualifying NL starters.

He lost his only postseason start, in Game 4 of the NL championship series against St. Louis, but he's allowed just one run and three hits in 13 innings of relief over five outings for a 0.69 ERA.

When he was relegated to the bullpen by manager Bruce Bochy, Lincecum said he didn't take it as a demotion. He just looked at it as a different way to help the team.

"I think we're all enjoying this right now," Lincecum said moments after the final out Saturday. "We're looking forward to tomorrow."

New study brings a doubted exoplanet 'back from the dead'

Saturday, October 27, 2012

A second look at data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is reanimating the claim that the nearby star Fomalhaut hosts a massive exoplanet. The study suggests that the planet, named Fomalhaut b, is a rare and possibly unique object that is completely shrouded by dust.

"Although our results seriously challenge the original discovery paper, they do so in a way that actually makes the object's interpretation much cleaner and leaves intact the core conclusion, that Fomalhaut b is indeed a massive planet," said Thayne Currie, an astronomer formerly at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and now at the University of Toronto.

The discovery study reported that Fomalhaut b's brightness varied by about a factor of two and cited this as evidence that the planet was accreting gas. Follow-up studies then interpreted this variability as evidence that the object actually was a transient dust cloud instead.

In the new study, Currie and his team reanalyzed Hubble observations of the star from 2004 and 2006. They easily recovered the planet in observations taken at visible wavelengths near 600 and 800 nanometers, and made a new detection in violet light near 400 nanometers. In contrast to the earlier research, the team found that the planet remained at constant brightness.

The team attempted to detect Fomalhaut b in the infrared using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, but was unable to do so. The non-detections with Subaru and Spitzer imply that Fomalhaut b must have less than twice the mass of Jupiter.

Another contentious issue has been the object's orbit. If Fomalhaut b is responsible for the ring's offset and sharp interior edge, then it must follow an orbit aligned with the ring and must now be moving at its slowest speed. The speed implied by the original study appeared to be too fast. Additionally, some researchers argued that Fomalhaut b follows a tilted orbit that passes through the ring plane.

Using the Hubble data, Currie's team established that Fomalhaut b is moving with a speed and direction consistent with the original idea that the planet's gravity is modifying the ring.

"What we've seen from our analysis is that the object's minimum distance from the disk has hardly changed at all in two years, which is a good sign that it's in a nice ring-sculpting orbit," explained Timothy Rodigas, a graduate student in the University of Arizona and a member of the team.

Currie's team also addressed studies that interpret Fomalhaut b as a compact dust cloud not gravitationally bound to a planet. Near Fomalhaut's ring, orbital dynamics would spread out or completely dissipate such a cloud in as little as 60,000 years. The dust grains experience additional forces, which operate on much faster timescales, as they interact with the star's light.

"Given what we know about the behavior of dust and the environment where the planet is located, we think that we're seeing a planetary object that is completely embedded in dust rather than a free-floating dust cloud," said team member John Debes, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md.

A paper describing the findings has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Because astronomers detect Fomalhaut b by the light of surrounding dust and not by light or heat emitted by its atmosphere, it no longer ranks as a "directly imaged exoplanet." But because it's the right mass and in the right place to sculpt the ring, Currie's team thinks it should be considered a "planet identified from direct imaging."

Fomalhaut was targeted with Hubble most recently in May by another team. Those observations are currently under scientific analysis and are expected to be published soon.

German publisher Burda bids for social network Xing

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German publisher Burda has bid to take over professional social network Xing AG as it further reduces its dependence on traditional printed media.

Privately held Burda said it had raised its stake in Xing to 38.89 percent, exceeding a legal threshold, which triggered the mandatory offer.

Burda is offering 44 euros per share for the remaining stake, valuing Xing at 240 million euros ($311.03 million), a 20 percent premium to Thursday's closing price.

Commerzbank analyst Heike Pauls advised shareholders against tendering their shares as the offer values Xing at less than 8 times 2012 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).

"Too cheap for a growth stock with consolidation upside. We still think LinkedIn may come forward with a better offer at some point in time."

Burda has been Xing's main shareholder since 2009 as part of an overhaul of its business to cope with declining revenues from print titles such as magazines "Bunte" and "Focus".

Xing, which connects professionals seeking jobs and companies looking for employees, said on Friday it would study the offer. It added that Burda so far has been a good strategic investor and that it was looking forward to this being the case in the future.

The network competes with U.S. peer LinkedIn and privately held Viadeo from France, and it makes money selling premium subscriptions and advertising.

Xing shares were up 18.2 percent at 44.10 euros at 1032 GMT, reflecting shareholders hopes for a better offer.

Xing has 12.4 million members worldwide of which 5.7 million are in German-speaking countries.

LinkedIn has 175 million members globally but still lags Xing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where it had about 2 million members at the end of June.

Obama, Romney campaign with eye on storm forecast

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are launching a 10-day sprint to the finish line in a contest increasingly about momentum vs. math.

Both campaigns are also keeping an eye on the weather. A huge storm barreling toward the East Coast ? and some battleground states ? has both campaigns adjusting their travel schedules and canceling events.

Even at this critical juncture of the campaign, neither side wants to risk the appearance of putting politics ahead of public safety.

The president is pressing on with a campaign trip Saturday to New Hampshire, while Romney is blitzing through Florida.

Romney and Vice President Joe Biden canceled weekend rallies in coastal Virginia.

Board Games: Family Fun for Everyone : KamloopsParents

I watch too much TV!!? There is no doubt about it.? But one thing that will always get me to turn the television off is the chance of playing a board game with friends and family.? Board games bring the family together.? They create a positive environment for conversation, learning (yes, your kids will learn and they won?t even realize it!) and most importantly FUN!

Board games have seen a recent increase in popularity due partly to marketing ? think the Hasbro Game Night campaign ? but more so due to the increased availability of designer games.

What are designer games you may ask.? Well, they are board games or card games that give recognition to the designer.? Much like a book has an author more and more games have the designer?s name on the box.? Creativity is being recognized.? These games originated in Europe but are now being published in North America.? The popularity of these ?Euro? games has grown so much that now many of these new designer games are being designed and published in North America.

These new games open up new worlds of discovery.? A family can gather around a table and build railway routes across North America (or just about any other part of the world), become explorers, discover new lands, build settlements, become an archaeologist racing through a temple full of dangers, colonize Mars, try to save rats from a sinking ship, race NASCAR or Formula 1 cars and even become bean farmers.? The themes are endless!

Games are no longer about rolling dice and moving with no end of the game in sight.? They are so much more!? Many of these ?new? games require planning ahead, strategic thinking, cooperation, and collaboration while having a set time limit!? Your kids will have to think and it won?t even hurt!

Over the coming months, I will be introducing new games that are ideal for family game play.? I hope these games will inspire you to sit down with your family, open a box and explore the adventures within.

Clive Lovett is a husband, father, board game hobbyist, an organizer of BIGCON (Kamloops Games Convention), and facilitator of Family Games Nights that are have been held in Elementary Schools in the Kamloops area.? He has a collection of nearly 300 board and card games that he is willing to play at any given opportunity.? For more information contact Clive at clovett65@shaw.ca

Our first game? Kids of Carcassonne

2 ? 4 players

15 minutes

Age 4+

$23.95 online, $30.00+ through local stores

It is the 14th July and the people of Carcassonne are celebrating Bastille Day.? To keep the kids busy and to let them celebrate the people of Carcassonne release all the dogs, sheep and cows into the park for the children to chase and capture.? Players take on the role of a group of children trying to find the animals in the park.

Each player has a group of meeples (wooden tokens in the shape of people) of the same colour that represent their group of children.? In turn players draw and reveal a landscape tile, creating the park as each tile is placed.? The tiles reveal pathways that connect and show children, in the players? colours, playing on these pathways.? Once a pathway has been closed off, each player places meeples on the children of their corresponding colour on the pathway.? The first player to get all their children (meeples) on the board is the winner!

This is a great game for kids 4+.? The artwork is very attractive and the meeples are just plain cool!? After a couple of plays your kids will develop basic strategies by developing connections that allow them to get their meeples on the board faster than their opponents.

Family Thoughts

Dad #1: Probably one of the best starter games for young kids!? A great game that children can play without the assistance of an adult.? Creating a different landscape every time the game is played is one of my favourite aspects of the game.

Mom #1: ?I love watching my daughter think and strategize.? It is a game that is great for kids but also keeps my attention ? and it plays quickly.

Sophie, Age 8: ?It is fun and I have to think and I like beating my parents!

Mom #2: I love watching my kids get into the game, and look out for one another. ?It?s a chance for us to work together and still ?against? one another, also. ?It?s simple and I enjoy watching the littles get excited when they close a road!

Dad #2: Adults and kids can play this game because there is a little bit of strategy involved but there is also a lot of luck.

Hunter, Age 7: ? I like that type of game. ?It?s fun and I like playing with my little brother and sister.

Dollar up on signs US economy slowly improving

NEW YORK (AP) ? The dollar rose against the euro Thursday on signs that the U.S. economy is slowly improving.

The Labor Department says that weekly applications for U.S. unemployment benefits fell last week to 369,000. That's consistent with modest hiring.

The National Association of Realtors said its index of home sale agreements rose slightly in September. And the Commerce Department said orders for durable goods rose 9.9 percent last month, although most of those gains were due to a spike in aircraft orders.

The euro fell to $1.2949 in late trading Thursday from $1.2973 late Wednesday.

The British pound rose against the dollar after the United Kingdom said that it has emerged from a nine-month recession. The British pound rose to $1.6124 from $1.6036.

The dollar rose to 80.29 Japanese yen from 79.78 yen and to 0.9343 Swiss franc from 0.9325 Swiss franc.

The dollar was flat at 99.40 Canadian cents.

Area of the brain that processes empathy identified

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? An international team led by researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York has for the first time shown that one area of the brain, called the anterior insular cortex, is the activity center of human empathy, whereas other areas of the brain are not. The study is published in the September 2012 issue of the journal Brain.

Empathy, the ability to perceive and share another person's emotional state, has been described by philosophers and psychologists for centuries. In the past decade, however, scientists have used powerful functional MRI imaging to identify several regions in the brain that are associated with empathy for pain. This most recent study, however, firmly establishes that the anterior insular cortex is where the feeling of empathy originates.

"Now that we know the specific brain mechanisms associated with empathy, we can translate these findings into disease categories and learn why these empathic responses are deficient in neuropsychiatric illnesses, such as autism," said Patrick R. Hof, MD, Regenstreif Professor and Vice-Chair, Department of Neuroscience at Mount Sinai, a co-author of the study. "This will help direct neuropathologic investigations aiming to define the specific abnormalities in identifiable neuronal circuits in these conditions, bringing us one step closer to developing better models and eventually preventive or protective strategies."

Xiaosi Gu, PhD, who conducted the research in the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai, worked with researchers from the United States and China, to evaluate Chinese patients, at Beijing Tiantan Hospital, who were shown color photographs of people in pain. Three patients had lesions caused by removing brain tumors in the anterior insular cortex; nine patients had lesions in other parts of the brain and 14 patients (the controls) had neurologically intact brains. The research team found that patients with damage restricted to the anterior insular cortex had deficits in explicit and implicit empathetic pain processing.

"In other words, patients with anterior insular lesions had a hard time evaluating the emotional state of people in pain and feeling empathy for them, compared to the controls and the patients with anterior cingulate cortex lesions." said Dr. Jin Fan, corresponding author of this study and an assistant professor at the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai.

According to Dr. Gu, this study provides the first evidence suggesting that the empathy deficits in patients with brain damage to the anterior insular cortex are surprisingly similar to the empathy deficits found in several psychiatric diseases, including autism spectrum disorders, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, and conduct disorders, suggesting potentially common neural deficits in those psychiatric populations.

"Our findings provide strong evidence that empathy is mediated in a specific area of the brain," said Dr. Gu, who now works at University College London. "The findings have implications for a wide range of neuropsychiatric illnesses, such as autism and some forms of dementia, which are characterized by prominent deficits in higher-level social functioning."

This study suggests that behavioral and cognitive therapies can be developed to compensate for deficits in the anterior insular cortex and its related functions such as empathy in patients. These findings can also inform future research evaluating the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying complex social functions in the anterior insular cortex and develop possible pharmacological treatments for patients.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Health, the James S. McDonnell Foundation and a Brain and Behavior Research Foundation NARSAD young investigator award.

Obama jokes Trump rivalry dates back to Kenya

While a Panda ticked off a Tiger on a field in San Francisco Thursday night, a circus of a different variety was being played out, triggered by?Donald Trump's YouTube video.

Trump's offer?$5 million to the charity of the president's choice in exchange for the release of Obama's college and passport applications?was?mocked mercilessly on Twitter.

On "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," President Barack Obama laughed it off, joking to Leno that the bad blood between him and the real estate mogul turned "birther" conspiracy theorist "dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya."

"Barack Obama is the least transparent president in the history of this country," Trump said in the video, shot from his New York office. "I have a deal for the president. ... If Barack Obama opens up and gives his college records and applications and if he gives his passport applications and records I will give to a charity of his choice?inner-city children in Chicago, American Cancer Society, AIDS research, anything he wants?a check immediately for $5 million."

Trump defended the offer Thursday night. "It's a serious, very serious offer," he?told CNN's Piers Morgan. "I can't imagine that for $5 million that he wouldn't do it."

The "Celebrity Apprentice" star dismissed the backlash to his stunt, also telling Morgan, "I've had tremendous praise for the most part."

My?hope is that,?as more of you pick up Windows 8 on your phone, slate, laptop or desktop, then you will join me?in shaping an app that is truly useful.

Currently, TWW collects the most useful RSS feeds and presents them to you.

Unlike a regular RSS reader, I am able to tailor the feed presentations?and promote?the different fields they use, those that are most relevant to the reader, for that feed.

For example, for "article updates", I want to link to the revision changes, not the revision itself.?It is the?highlighted differences?that show me how the article has changed.

The "article updates" feed only provides the actual revision article link. I take that revision number, and instead link the user to the awesomely useful?"version compare" feature of TechNet Wiki.

TWW also allows you to Tweet an article URL to your Twitter account. In this way, you can help us promote TNWiki articles to other networks.

These are some of the ways I hope to help you, in your wiki life.

??

And this is where YOU come in...

I?hope?to make this app genuinely useful to YOU?the people who regularly use TechNet.

What I need to understand is how you USE TechNet.

?

What kind of searches?you?make regularly?

What RSS feeds do you already subscribe to?

What sections do you browse?

Which stats are of most interest?

?

These and many other questions will help us all better define how best to organise and consume TechNet Wiki contributions.

?

I am building the TN Wiki Widget?for YOU, so feel free to let me know when you think of?a feature that would help you, in your wiki life.

?

Please post your ideas?and comments below,?or on the wiki article, or just in reply to future posts about updates.

?

Here's hoping Santa stuffs your stockings full of Windows 8 devices this Christmas!

Voting and the Market | Orange County NY Real Estate Agent -The ...

In just a few weeks, you?ll be (hopefully) casting your vote in the next presidential election. But what does this election mean to buying and selling a home? It can be summarized as consumer confidence.? Buyers ultimately need to be confident that the purchase they?re making is going to be a good one.

Our business doesn?t do mortgages, but we work with a lot of lenders and in the last 12 to 18 months we?ve seen that many buyers are qualified to purchase a home. However, buyers are sitting on the fence right now and understandably so. They are waiting to see which way the market is headed. Is it going to decline or stabilize and finally point upwards??

I have my reasons for believing that we have finally hit the bottom and it?s going to be a slow and steady incline back to real-price appreciation. We still have a tremendous amount of toxic debt still on the books around the nation and around the world. It?s going to be a long, arduous recovery, but for the first time in almost seven years, we?re going to see price appreciation next year, from the middle of the first quarter to the start of the of the second quarter. Albeit, it?s going to be small percentages, but I suspect that we will see some price increases finally for the first time in seven years.?

That said, the presidential election is key, because right now a lot of people are still on hold about buying a home. They?re waiting to see who?s going to be elected. Everyone has their own opinions of how President Obama is going to affect things going forward, or how Governor Romney, if he is elected, will change how the market is going. Either way, I see the market returning to stability and with the close of the elections we should be able to move quicker. ?

Facebook woos back Wall Street as shares rise

Facebook shares are on track for their largest percentage gain ever, with Colin Sebastian, Robert W. Baird & Co.

    By Cadie Thompson, CNBC.com

Wall Street seems to like?Facebook?again for the same reason it used to hate it. That reason can be summed up in one word: mobile.

The social network's stock is having its biggest single-day surge since the company went public in May.?Facebook's?shares were up more than 20 percent around midday Wednesday, trading at about $23.61, and the company was the top gainer on the?Nasdaq.

Multiple brokerage firms raised their price target for the social media company Tuesday after it reported a 32 percent increase in revenue and a surprising increase in mobile advertising in?its third quarter earnings.

"We definitely knew that the mobile side of the business was strong, but the magnitude of the growth and revenue was shocking I think to everybody," Jordan Rohan, managing director at Stifel Nicolaus, said Wednesday?CNBC's Halftime Report.

"The fact that in May they had essentially zero mobile revenues and for the September quarter $150 million in revenues, that is something that I think caught everybody by surprise."

Facebook's revenue jumped to $1.26 billion from $954 million a year ago in the third quarter, a 32 percent increase. Advertising revenue increased by 36 percent to $1.09 billion, a 36 percent increase from a year ago. (Read More:?Facebook May Get $1 Billion From Mobile.)

Barclays Capital,?Jefferies,?Macquarie Equities Research?raised their price targets on the company, while?Citigroup,?BofA Merrill?and?Stifel?raised their rating to a buy.

Mobile advertising concerns have weighed heavily on Facebook shares since the company's initial public offering in May when the stock sold for $38 per share. But the recent earnings report may be a sign that Facebook's mobile problem is a thing of the past, Rohan said.

"What's exciting about Facebook right now is we actually have now turned the corner. Six months ago mobile was the enemy at some level. Mobile was the force that would reduce monetization for the overall Facebook platform," Rohan said. "Now mobile...is actually a friend to Facebook."

Samsung Galaxy Note II to arrive at US Cellular on Friday, preorders ship tomorrow

US Cellular has been offering the Samsung Galaxy Note II on pre-order for over a month now, but it just sent out an email clarifying that the device will be stocked on retail and virtual shelves beginning this Friday, October 26th. This falls in line with the "late October" timeframe we were promised; pre-orders, by the way, will also begin shipping tomorrow. As a recap, the Note II will only be available in titanium gray and with 16GB internal storage, and will cost $300 with a two-year commitment and $800 without one -- a huge difference, no doubt, given T-Mobile's $650 full retail cost. Tomorrow is the last day to pre-order if you're worried about facing inventory shortages or long lines on Friday. The best part? No silly logo on the home button (we're looking at you, Verizon).

7 Reasons to Try Interval Training Now - Shape

Interval training is the ultimate fitness mashup, blending the speeds of both the tortoise and the hare. The benefits of this workout ? pushing your pace, then slowing down to recover just so you can push your pace again ? will certainly motivate you to play with your speed. If you haven't already added them to your cardio workouts, here are seven benefits of interval training. While cardio exercise is necessary to losing fat all over your body, according to research published in the International Journal of Obesity, interval training targets your waistline. Adding bursts of speed can help you lose stubborn abdominal fat, which is a boon for your skinny jeans and your overall health. Having a waist size over 35 inches if you're a woman puts you at a higher risk for heart disease and some cancers.

Got a Need For Speed? The most obvious benefit, but still worth noting, is that interval training will make you faster. Picking up your pace when training with intervals helps to increase your speed, whether you run, bike, or swim. If you're working toward a personal record for an upcoming race, then don't skip your speed work. Here are interval workouts for biking, swimming, and running. Triathlon, anyone?

Up Your Afterburn Interval training increases the after-burn effect. This means that postexercise, your body burns more calories, even during rest or sleep, after doing intervals than after doing a steadily paced workout. Science suggests that to maximize this effect, you should alternate between three minutes of speed and three minutes of recovery, or slow bouts, for 30 to 60 minutes ? after warming up, of course.

Save Time No doubt about it ? interval training is efficient. Pushing your cardiovascular system by adding intervals means you burn more calories in less time. By alternating between fast and slow, you can work out harder and longer than if you were just pushing your max speed. Efficient intervals mean you can spend less time at the gym and more time in the sauna.

Go Longer Even though interval workouts might be shorter than your other workouts, this form of exercise will increase your endurance. Long runs and rides will be easier if interval training is part of your regular exercise routine. Another bonus is that climbing hills will feel easier too.

Decrease Your Resting Heart Rate The fewer times your heart beats per minute, the less wear and tear there is on the mechanics of the organ. Interval training makes your heart more efficient, so it pumps more blood with each beat, reducing the number of beats per minute.

Interval Training Works With All Forms of Cardio Intervals may not be for everyone; it's best to have a strong cardio base before pushing yourself with intervals. And interval training doesn't have to mean sprinting. Use the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) to moderate your speed and effort. However, intervals can be done with every kind of cardio. You can play with your speed on the elliptical and on the rowing machine. I like to think that the walk/run programs are an introduction to intervals.

    LG Optimus G (AT&T)

The LG Optimus G ($199.99) has all the makings of a killer smartphone. From its 4.7-inch 720p display to its quad-core processor, this is definitely the fastest smartphone on AT&T, and one of the nicest looking, too. Its 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor turned in the fastest benchmarks we've ever seen on an Android phone?even faster than the model we tested on Sprint. And 4G LTE speeds on AT&T were positively smoking. Unfortunately, all that speed makes for some overheating issues, and camera performance is average at best. The Optimus G is a beast of a phone, but it isn't perfect.

Editors' Note: The LG Optimus G?models on AT&T and Sprint are extremely similar, so we're sharing a lot of material between these two reviews. That said, we're testing each device separately, so read the review for your carrier of choice.

    Design, Call Quality, and Network
The Optimus G on AT&T looks a lot like it does on Sprint, which is a good thing. LG created the gorgeous?Prada phone, so it's no surprise that the Optimus G is quite a looker. Made of high-quality plastic on the sides, with glass panels on the front and back, the phone has a vaguely incandescent pattern on the back that looks different depending on the angle you view it from. I miss the silver accent ring wrapped around the middle of the Sprint version, but the phone still pulls off simple-chic very well. Next to the?Apple iPhone 5, this is easily the nicest-looking phone we've seen. And at 5.12 by 2.82 by 0.33 inches and 5.19 ounces, it's a reasonable size given its large 4.7-inch display.

That 4.7-inch HD IPS Plus LCD is pretty awesome. It features 1280-by-720-pixel resolution, which works out to a crisp 312 pixels per inch. And unlike the?Samsung Galaxy S III?, this phone doesn't use a PenTile pixel layout, so it looks even sharper. That big screen is ideal for watching video, playing games, and taking photos. It also means you get a sprawling keyboard for typing; I actually had to stretch my entire thumb across the screen in order to hit every letter. It's a little big and unwieldy, but so are all phones with a screen this size.

One big problem: I did most of my testing with the screen brightness set to maximum. I noticed it dip considerably after about 10 or 15 minutes of benchmarking. When I checked on it in the phone's Settings, I saw the brightness level had dropped down to 66 percent. I tried to turn it back up, and got the message, "Unable to brighten more due to high temperature. Try again later." This happened on multiple occasions. Especially when using processor-intensive applications like games, the top half of the phone became increasingly warm. LG claims it has not encountered this problem, but this device, along with two test units on Sprint all showed the same behavior in our tests.

Three function keys beneath the display light up when the screen is on, otherwise the front of the phone is completely black. There's a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top, a cool glowing power button on the right, a volume rocker on the left, and a charging port on the bottom. There's also a microSD port on the left side of this phone, a welcome addition that's missing in the Sprint version.

The Optimus G supports AT&T's 4G LTE network, as well as HSPA+ 21. AT&T scored high in our?Fastest Mobile Networks?tests earlier this year, especially for its LTE network. Speeds in New York City were incredible. I saw an average of 33Mbps down and 12Mbps up, along with a high of 44Mbps down, which is about double the speed I get on my home internet connection.

Reception was solid, and call quality was good overall. Voices are a little muddy in the phone's earpiece, with some audible fuzz in the background. But calls made sounded clear and natural, with good background noise cancellation. The speakerphone sounds harsh, but is loud enough to use outdoors. The phone paired easily with my?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset. LG's Voice Command app was extremely finicky, and I had to repeat a number of commands over and over again.

The Optimus G uses Bluetooth 4.0, which allows various smart watches and fitness devices to communicate with the phone. It also supports 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi on the 2.4 and 5GHz bands.?The nonremovable 2100mAh battery was good for an excellent 13 hours and 37 minutes of 3G talk time.

    Android and Apps
The Optimus G is the first U.S. phone powered by Qualcomm's 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor. Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note II will be packing a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos 4412, but performance there remains to be seen. As it stands, this is the fastest Android phone we've tested?even faster than the Sprint version. According to our benchmarks, performance can sometimes be almost double that of phones like the Galaxy S III. It's actually closer to results we've seen?on top Android tablets, especially for gaming. Internet performance is solid, on par with the Editors' Choice Galaxy S III.?

The Optimus G ships with Android 4.0.4 "Ice Cream Sandwich," which LG pledges to update to Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" within the coming months. Although Ice Cream Sandwich lacks Google's Project Butter, which smoothes out the Android experience, the quad-core processor still makes everything feel fast.

British FM warns against more power for Brussels

(AP) ? Britain has struck out against pressure for the 27-nation European Union to centralize more decision-making as the continent tackles its debt crisis, with its foreign secretary insisting that Europe needs flexibility and not uniformity.

Rebuffing German calls for deeper integration, William Hague warned a foreign policy conference in Berlin Tuesday against imposing a model designed to help the 17 countries that use the euro with their debt crisis on all 27 members of the EU.

"There are obvious issues for countries not in the eurozone, for whom it will never be acceptable to have a situation in which the eurozone acts as a bloc (...) in a way that determines the outcomes before the others have even met," Hague said.

Britain has long been the most skeptical member of the EU and is facing calls at home for a referendum on its continued membership. Hague's warning was clearly at odds with German Chancellor Angela Merkel's insistence on the need to deepen Europe's political and economic cooperation to emerge stronger from the debt crisis.

"The eurozone countries must do what they must to resolve the crisis, but the way forward for the EU as a whole is not more centralization and uniformity but of flexibility and variable geometry ... so as not to disadvantage those that do not wish to participate in everything, and preserves the things we all value," said Hague.

However, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, speaking at the same event, insisted that not only the eurozone, but Europe as a whole must deepen its cooperation, and that it shouldn't shy away from bold steps of further integration that will require changing the EU treaties ? a lengthy procedure opposed by Britain and others.

"It is well known that diamonds are only formed under great pressure. And apparently good political solutions also need extreme pressure," Westerwelle said. "The pressure stemming from the current problems must now be out to use."

EU leaders last week held a summit hammering out details on the creation of a centralized European banking supervisory mechanism, a so-called banking union. But Britain ? whose capital is home to the EU's biggest financial hub ? remains very skeptical about that plan, saying it threatens to isolate those countries who don't want to join.

Hague also dismissed the idea of strengthening the bloc's foreign policy and military cooperation, saying that "it would be neither right nor realistic" to decide on matters of war and peace by a qualified majority of the 27 members.

"Indeed, just because some things work well in coordination with all of our European partners does not mean we should do everything at 27," he said.

Westerwelle, in turn, stressed that the bloc must act together to address foreign policy and security challenges in its own neighborhood, citing the situation in northern Mali, where al-Qaida-linked radical Islamists have seized power in an area the size of France.

"From Mali you only have to cross one border to reach the Mediterranean. Ladies and gentlemen, here lies a stabilization task that we have to undertake together," he said.

Mount a Cycling Water Bottle Cage to Your Wall to Keep Drinks Handy and Avoid SpillsDo you often spill beverages at your workspace or perhaps knock over a glass of water you keep on your nightstand? Reddit user TheSpiffySpaceman shares how he mounted a bicycle water bottle cage to his wall at his workstation to keep his favorite beverage handy and to eliminate 99% of spills.

As another Redditor pointed out this could also be a great way to store olive oil and other kitchen items that come in bottles.

Found out that a water bottle holder from a bike makes for an easy wall beverage holder | Reddit

Detroit Business Consulting Raises Money for Susan G. Komen ...

Detroit Business Consulting celebrated breast cancer awareness month by hosting our Passionately Pink Week last week. ?This is the second year that we have hosted Passionately Pink Week in our office. We went all out- the website was "pinked out" with our pink logo, breast cancer ribbons all over the website, and each page had a pink theme. ?Everyone in the office wore pink on Thursday, and we all sported pink breast cancer bracelets.
Everyone at Detroit Business Consulting could show their support by wearing pink last week, but we also had another way to support the foundation. ?Detroit Business Consulting's owner Michael Rosenberg announced on Monday that he would make a $20 donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation each day for every person that hit their sales goals for the day. ?Michael committed to making that donation for every person, every day last week. ?Thanks to everyone for your support in making out Passionately Pink Week a success!
