Melvin Guillard survives Jamie Varner slam but loses UFC 155 bout

Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner staked a late claim to the UFC 155 Fight of the Night bonus with a bout that ended in a split decision. Varner won it on the judges' cards, 30-27, 27-30, 29-28.

Varner gained an edge early in the bout by tagging Guillard in the first round. Guillard showed good kicks, but couldn't escape Varner's takedowns for much of the bout. But the most frightening moment of the bout came late in the third round.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

The two were scrambling on the ground for position when Guillard took Varner's back. Varner stood up, and with Guillard's head pointed to the ground, Varner slammed his opponent to the ground. Amazingly, Guillard was not knocked out or injured from the move. The fight ended seconds after, and the two embraced.

?This was a very emotional fight for both of us," Varner said after the bout. "After what happened a few weeks ago at the "TUF Finale" event, we were both ready to compete. I knew we would eventually get in the Octagon and squash our beef and I definitely feel that we did. I?m happy about my performance, I feel that I was able to dominate the fight wherever we ended up and I?m glad I got the win.?

Varner and Guillard were originally scheduled to fight during "The Ultimate Fighter" finale on Dec. 15, but illness kept Varner from the cage. Guillard was understandably upset about the delay, leading to trash talk.

Jenny McCarthy, Ryan Seacrest Host New Year?s Rockin? Eve!

Jenny McCarthy will team up with smooth operator Ryan Seacrest to fill some big shoes this New Year’s Eve. Now that the legendary Dick Clark has passed away, things will never be quite the same, but throwing McCarthy in the mix will give it some much needed life. Even though Dick Clark was a television icon, he should have hung it up a while ago. I know, this is not cool to say, but I’m not afraid to be honest. At the end, they only brought him in for the countdown, and it was just a little awkward. So uncomfortable that even the expert broadcasting of Seacrest couldn’t exactly smooth it over. Regardless, the show must go on. The New Year’s Rockin’ Eve show will be given a new lease this year. About the new gig, McCarthy said: “I?m excited. I have more fun doing live TV than anything, I think because it?s hard to censor. And I like that! So it?s a little more off the cuff, and you never know what?s going to happen.? She’s right, unpredictable things happen — like her kissing a stranger a few years ago during a broadcast. In fact, this year will be [...]

A personal finance to-do list for the year's end | The Salt Lake Tribune

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York, U.S., on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012. U.S. stocks trimmed gains as technology and financial shares weighed down the market after an earlier rally boosted by takeover activity. Photographer: Scott Eells/Bloomberg

Advice ? Tips for last-minute moves could save you money, lower taxes.

Even as the hours slowly tick down toward 2013, there still is time to make last-minute moves to enhance your finances and lower your taxes for the year, according to financial planners.

Sharla Jessop, a vice president and private wealth management consultant at Smedley Financial Services in Salt Lake City, said that if you?re thinking about giving cash to a favorite charity, you may instead consider donating stock that has appreciated in value.

"Provided [you] have held those shares for at least a year and a day, [you] can donate the stock before the end of the year and not have to pay any capital gains," Jessop said.

She also noted that parents holding stocks that have appreciated may want to give them to their children as a gift before year?s end. Although the children "still will have to pay the capital gains, they typically will be in a lower tax bracket than their parents."

Jessop added that if you anticipate selling stock within the next six months that has risen in value, you may want to liquidate your position now because capital gains taxes are expected to go up in 2013.

Here are some other year-end tips by financial professionals.

Do your donations ? If you want a charitable deduction on this year?s taxes, you need to write that donation check by Dec. 31. Donations made on a credit card by Dec. 31 are deductible for 2012, even if you pay the Visa bill in 2013, the Internal Revenue Service says. A gift by check also counts for 2012, as long it?s mailed in December. Gifts to individuals ? friends, family or strangers ? are not deductible.

Max out the 401(k) ? It?s a gift to yourself, a little more retirement cushion. If you haven?t maxed out the annual contribution to your 401(k) at work, do so now. For 2012, the annual contribution limit is $17,000; next year, it goes up to $17,500. If you?re over age 50, you can make an additional catch-up contribution this year of $5,500.

Ditto for your IRA ? To boost your retirement savings, don?t forget these contributions. In 2012, the maximum contribution to IRAs and Roth IRAs is the smaller of $5,000 or your taxable compensation for the year. For those age 50 or older, the limit is $6,000.

If you?re not covered by a retirement plan at work, you can get a full tax deduction for IRA contributions. If covered by an employer?s retirement plan, you can take a deduction up to certain income limits (i.e. no deduction is allowed for married couples filing jointly with incomes above $112,000).

    story continues below

"Moving" donations ? If you?re donating a car, boat or plane to a charitable organization at year?s end, the IRS reminds that you can deduct only the fair market amount when the car is sold by the charity. This applies to vehicle deductions valued at $500 or more.

Spend those FSA dollars ? If you have a Flexible Spending Account at work to cover health/dependent care costs, now?s the time to make sure you?ve exhausted all those tax-free, use-it-or-lose-it dollars you squirreled away. Once you?ve spent those dollars, you?ll still need to file claims through your employer?s health plan to get reimbursed.

Know your deadlines ? For dependent care (such as child care or adult day care), the deadline to incur expenses or file claims is Dec. 31. For health care expenses, many employers offer a grace period through the first part of 2013. Check with your employer?s plan for deadlines.

Note that not everything you buy is reimbursable as a health care expense. For a detailed list, go to IRS.gov or your health care provider?s website.

Prepare the paper ? Now is a good time to start gathering the paperwork for filing your 2012 taxes. Even if it?s simply tossing it into a shoebox, start collecting proof of income (pay stubs, 1099s, W-2s) and proof of deductions/donations (charitable receipts, canceled checks, credit card statements, payroll deductions).

Whether you use a professional tax preparer or do your taxes yourself, getting organized now can ease headaches down the road.

Senate leaders in last-ditch fiscal cliff talks

Scientologists may be facing their most daunting court case yet, and all it took was for someone to stop calling them a cult. After a years long legal battle, federal prosecutors in?Belgium now believe their investigation is complete enough to charge the Church of Scientology and its leaders as a criminal organization on charges of extortion, fraud, privacy breaches, and the illegal practice of medicine. "The decision follows years of investigation that was triggered by a complaint by the Labour Mediation Service in the Brussels Region. ...

UK's Pearson invests in Barnes & Noble's Nook

(AP) ? Pearson, the U.K. publisher and education company, is to take a 5 percent stake in Barnes & Noble's NOOK e-reader as technology companies seek new inroads into the potentially lucrative business of digital textbooks for schools.

Pearson PLC will pay $89.5 million cash for a 5 percent stake in NOOK Media LLC which includes the bookseller's e-reader and tablets, its digital bookstore and its 674 stores serving U.S. colleges. Barnes & Noble will hold 78.2 percent of the business and Microsoft will have about 16.8 percent, the company said Friday.

Major tech companies have looked for inroads into the industry, seeing tablets like the iPad and the NOOK as replacements for the dozens of books that students must lug to and from school each day.

Walter Isaacson in his biography of Steve Jobs wrote about meetings between the co-founder of Apple Inc. and major publishers to accomplish just that before his death last year.

Janney Capital Markets described the tie-up between Pearson and Barnes & Noble as an "online education dream team."

"After this investment from Pearson, it is more clear that Nook Media has its sight set on transforming the way education is administered in the U.S. and around the world," analyst David Strasser wrote.

Pearson is the largest higher educational publisher in the world and the largest in kindergarten-through-high school publisher in the United States, Janney said. The company, which also owns the Financial Times and whose Penguin book brand is in the process of being merged with Random House, reported that its textbooks and training made 1.9 billion pounds ($3 billion) in revenue the first six months of 2012.

Will Ethridge, CEO of Pearson North America, says his company had worked with Barnes & Noble for decades and have invested heavily in providing engaging and effective digital reading experiences.

"It is another example of our strategy of making our content and services broadly available to students and faculty through a wide range of distribution partners," Ethridge said.

Barnes & Noble Inc. has invested heavily in the Nook e-reader. It has faced tough competition from online retailers like Amazon.com and discount stores, with shoppers moving away from traditional books in favor of electronic books.

Applicant-Initiated Interviews at Tuck School of Business | Stacy ...

Tuck School of BusinessDid you know that Dartmouth?s Tuck School of Business offers applicants the chance to initiate an interview with admissions? Unlike it?s peer schools, which typically maintain an invitation-only policy, Tuck?s Open Interview Policy means that any applicant who wants to visit the school and interview with the admissions committee may do so.

In a video message posted to the Tuck School website, Director of Admissions Dawna Clarke explains that interviews are so helpful for the admissions committee in order to assess those valuable interpersonal skills, team skills, leadership skills, and of course, communication skills.

Applicants want the opportunity to be heard, and Tuck is proud to be able to offer that opportunity to any applicant who requests it, Clarke says, noting that ?An interview really helps us get a sense of your personality and softer skills that are a little harder to assess on the basis of a written application.?

The interviews are with either second-year students or a member of the admissions committee, and applicants have the opportunity to sit in on a class, have lunch with a second-year student, tour the facilities, and participate in an information session with an AdCom member during their visit.

For applicants unable to visit Tuck and take advantage of the open interview option, Clarke explains that they would need to briefly explain the reason on their application and wait for the admissions committee invitation to interview, which is issued after an initial review of a candidate?s application.

According to Tuck, on-campus interviews are conducted by admissions committee members and selected second-year students. Off-campus interviews are conducted by admissions committee members, admissions associates, or alumni interviewers. All interviews are evaluated equally, regardless of interviewer, location, or how initiated.

Applicants should note that with the exception of the January round, interviews must be completed by the published deadline for the round in which you are applying. Because the January round deadline is 1/3/13, the applicant-initiated interview deadline is January 31st.

Last-Ditch Summit in D.C. to Avert 'Cliff'

    By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone ) and AMY WALTER ( @amyewalter )

    NOTABLES:

WHITE HOUSE SAYS, NO NEW PLAN: ABC's Jonathan Karl, Sunlen Miller, John Parkinson and Sarah Parnass report that the White House said Thursday it has no plans to offer new proposals to avoid the fiscal cliff which looms over the country's economy just four days from now, but will meet Friday with Congressional leaders in a last ditch effort to forge a deal. The White House announced the meeting after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called the budget situation "a mess" and urged the president to present a fresh proposal. But a senior White House official told ABC News, "there is no White House bill." http://abcn.ws/UpszEt

THE FISCAL CLIFF AND YOU: Unless there's a deal the fiscal cliff could do real damage to the economy, reports ABC News Business Correspondent Richard Davies. The first and best known impact would be sweeping tax hikes: "By jacking up taxes on so many taxpayers it will squeeze purchasing power," says Greg Ip, U.S. Economics Editor of The Economist. Many consumers and businesses would cut back on spending. "They just decide to pull back not to spend not to buy that house not to initiate that new business venture and that would multiply the negative impact." The third effect would come from sharp and sudden government spending cuts. "You'll see layoffs in the defense industry layoffs in any industry that does business with the federal government as federal spending is cut back sharply."

BACK TO WORK FOR HILLARY CLINTON: ABC's Dana Hughes reports that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will return to work next week after recovering from a stomach virus and a concussion. "The Secretary continues to recuperate at home. She had long planned to take this holiday week off, so she had no work schedule," said Clinton aide Philippe Reines in a statement. "She looks forward to getting back to the office next week and resuming her schedule." The last time Clinton was seen in public was December 7, leaving Northern Ireland after a whirlwind European trip.

THIS WEEK ON 'THIS WEEK': Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, and Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., debate the latest on the last-minute efforts to avoid the fiscal cliff, Sunday on "This Week." Plus, ABC News Senior White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl and the powerhouse roundtable debate all the week's politics, featuring former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean. Check the "This Week" page for full guest listings. Tune in Sunday: http://abcnews.go.com/thisweek (h/t ABC's Imtiyaz Delawala)

    THE NOTE:

'Twas the Friday after Christmas and all through Washington not a deal was stirring, not even at the White House?

With the center of gravity in the fiscal cliff negotiations shifting to the Senate and to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, lawmakers and President Obama will try to break the stalemate today at 3 p.m. ET when President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden sit down with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

There are now just four days to go before the country falls off the cliff, and as ABC's Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl noted on "Good Morning America" today, this is actually the very first meeting all sides have had together in six weeks. The last time this group met was Nov. 16. http://abcn.ws/VGsGrV

That may be hard to believe, but it's not really that surprising when you listen to the rhetoric coming from both Senate leaders.

"Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything Senate Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves as the edge of the cliff," McConnell said on the Senate floor yesterday.

Meanwhile, Reid likened Speaker Boehner's leadership in the House to a "dictatorship" that was preventing "the vast majority of the House of Representatives to get what they want."

Most Capitol Hill insiders agree that the we probably go off the fiscal cliff - at least for a little while - with a real deal to come in January after the new Congress is sworn in, but there may be another option on the table.

The two sides could come together to support what Karl described as a "small deal that would at least prevent these tax increases from going into effect for most people."

Chances of that happening? Jon Karl puts them at three to five percent. Not exactly a glass-half-full scenario.

    NOTED!

ABC'S AMY WALTER: Perhaps it's because I'm a parent to a six-year-old, but the only way to make sense of the fiscal cliff shenanigans is to put it in child rearing terms. If there is no consequence for bad behavior, then the bad behavior will continue. Think how many times you have heard (or said) "if you don't stop this right now then X will happen." When X doesn't happen (the car doesn't pull over, dessert is still served etc), the child learns that he or she can indeed get away with breaking the rules. In Washington, the only real consequence is losing an election. And, since both sides believe they won in 2012 (Democrats held the White House and Senate despite high unemployment; Republicans held the House despite sky-high disapproval ratings), neither side sees a real downside to letting the country fall off the fiscal cliff. A frustrated public, a declining Dow - these are not the consequences that will spur either side to action. It's only when defeat, real lasting defeat is felt, that compromise will happen.

    THE BUZZ:

    with ABC's Elizabeth Hartfield ( @LizHartfield)

NORMAN SCHWARZKOPF, GULF WAR COMMANDER, DIES AT 78. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the retired general credited with leading U.S.-allied forces to a victory in the first Gulf War, died Thursday. He was 78 years old. ABC's Michael James reports, Schwarzkopf, called "Stormin' Norman" because of his reportedly explosive temper, actually led Republican administrations to two military victories: a small one in Grenada in the 1980s and a big one as de facto commander of allied forces in the Gulf War in 1991. "'Stormin' Norman' led the coalition forces to victory, ejecting the Iraqi Army from Kuwait and restoring the rightful government," read a statement by former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Gulf War. "His leadership not only inspired his troops, but also inspired the nation." http://abcn.ws/12Sy0ii

WHITE HOUSE LASHES OUT AT 'CONGRESSIONAL STUPIDITY.' With only days to come up with a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, the White House said "congressional stupidity" was damaging the economy but that an agreement could be reached if Republican leaders don't get in the way. ABC's Sarah Parnass, John Parkinson and Reena Ninan report, while Boehner has put the onus on the president and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a White House official used testy language to put the responsibility back on Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. "What we need is for the Senate Minority Leader not to block a vote and for Boehner to allow a vote," a White House official told ABC News. "The hits to our economy aren't coming from outside factors, they're coming from congressional stupidity." http://abcn.ws/12FUTWY

BUSH 41 GETTING EXCELLENT TREATMENT. The AP's Michael Graczyk reports, "Former President George H.W. Bush, who has been hospitalized for more than a month, is getting excellent medical treatment and would advise people to 'put the harps back in the closet,' his longtime Houston chief of staff said Thursday evening. But Jean Becker also pointed out in her statement that the 88-year-old Bush is sick and likely will be in the hospital for a while after a 'terrible case of bronchitis which then triggered a series of complications.'" http://abcn.ws/12SyEfB

ED MARKEY DECLARES CANDIDACY IN SENATE SPECIAL. The Boston Globe's Mark Arsenault reports, "US Representative Edward J. Markey, dean of the state's Washington delegation, will run in 2013 for the Senate seat expected to open with the nomination of Senator John F. ?Kerry to head the State Department. Markey, 66, a Malden Democrat elected to the House in 1976, is the first prominent candidate to ?declare a run for Kerry's seat, which will be filled through a special election early next summer, probably in June. Kerry, a Democrat and head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is expected to be easily confirmed by the Senate in coming weeks as the next secretary of state." http://bo.st/UvYmEP

SENATORS CHAFE AT INACTION OVER FISCAL CLIFF DEAL. The New York Times Jennifer Steinhauer reports, "Senators bid hasty goodbyes to families, donned ties and pantsuits in lieu of sweat pants and Christmas sweaters and one by one returned to the Capitol on Thursday to begin the business of doing nothing in particular. But for once, those lawmakers were fully united, if only around their sadness and frustration at being stuck in Washington in a holiday week, peering over the edge of the fiscal abyss. Not to be outdone, Speaker John A. Boehner, who failed last week to cobble together enough votes for his own bill, ordered House members to return on Sunday." http://nyti.ms/VloqCm

EXPERTS: TRAINED POLICE NEEDED FOR SCHOOL SECURITY. The AP's Larry Margasak reports, "the student's attack began with a shotgun blast through the windows of a California high school. Rich Agundez, the El Cajon policeman assigned to the school, felt his mind shift into overdrive. While two teachers and three students were injured when the glass shattered in the 2001 attack on Granite Hills High School, Agundez confronted the assailant and wounded him before he could get inside the school and use his second weapon, a handgun. The National Rifle Association's response to a Connecticut school massacre envisions, in part, having trained, armed volunteers in every school in America. But Agundez, school safety experts and school board members say there's a huge difference between a trained law enforcement officer who becomes part of the school family - and a guard with a gun." http://apne.ws/VaJgSq

HAWAII'S BRIAN SCHATZ SWORN INTO SENATE. Politico's Seung Min Kim reports, "Hawaii Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz was sworn in to the Senate Thursday afternoon to replace Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), who died last week of respiratory complications. 'I was pleased to have my family here with me,' Schatz said in brief comments after he was sworn in. 'And of course, we're hopeful to get right to work on averting the fiscal cliff.' Despite his relative youth - he's 40 - and just being sworn in, Schatz will be Hawaii's senior senator. Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) is retiring and will be replaced by Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), who is set to be sworn in next week when the 113th Congress begins." http://politi.co/Uw3VTO

BUDGET WRITERS AT PENTAGON MOVE FORWARD DESPITE SPENDING THREAT. The Hill's Carlo Munoz reports, "The Pentagon is pretending the threat of the "fiscal cliff" doesn't exist when it comes to the Defense Department's 2014 budget. Budget planners are preparing their 2014 budget as if lawmakers will avoid the spending cuts known as sequestration that are scheduled to hit the Pentagon in January." http://bit.ly/WMJUHf

    IN THE NOTE'S INBOX:

-OP-ED: THE SENATE SHOULD BLOCK AN END RUN ON NUCLEAR ARMS. John Bolton and John Yoo penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal calling for the senate to block an end run on nuclear arms. "President Obama has made eliminating all nuclear weapons his signature policy. In 2011, his New Start Treaty committed the United States to a ceiling of 700 strategic delivery vehicles and 1,550 strategic warheads," Bolton and Yoo write. "Now, as he promised in March, he seeks even deeper reductions through "a step we have never taken before-reducing not only our strategic nuclear warheads, but also tactical weapons and warheads in reserve." But the president faces the Constitution's requirement that two-thirds of the Senate consent to any treaty. In 2010, the Senate ratified New Start with a vote of 71-26, but only after ending a filibuster with the exact 67 votes needed for a treaty. After his nasty re-election campaign, partisan budget wrangling and unfulfilled promises to modernize our nuclear stockpile, Mr. Obama will have a hard time finding 12 Republican senators to support any new nuclear deal with Russia. Senators should block end-runs around the Constitution's treaty clause." http://on.wsj.com/THJsg5

Boundaries ? Useful Marriage as well as Relationship - financial news

Unfortunately, the opposite is also true my partner and i.e. women who will be financially and therefore, emotionally prominent in relationships. I?ve had the likewise unpleasant expertise in witnessing a girl relative exhibiting the same bad qualities down the page. It is therefore not really a rare occurrence!

And the fact that he or she is abusing exactly the same person who possesses surrendered to help him by way of love says to you that there is amount of character inside him. Likely he is terrified of you leaving him and therefore he has decided to control an individual in such a way you will think there may be nobody else remaining who would accept you. This is the choice that escalates the blunders he is by now doing, simply because you as a any kind of woman need to be cherished and respected and also cared for.

Did David Gregory just violate D.C. gun law by ... - Legal Insurrection

It sure looks that way, unless the gun clip Gregory held up today was just a dummy prop.

I saw a number of tweets linking to this post David Gregory Violates DC Gun Law On National TV?quoting D.C. Official Code 7-2506.01 (emphasis in original):

    b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm. For the purposes of this subsection, the term ?large capacity ammunition feeding device? means a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device that has a capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The term ?large capacity ammunition feeding device? shall not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.

I confirmed via Westlaw that this is in fact existing D.C. law.? Here?s the entire section:

? 7-2506.01. Persons permitted to possess ammunition.

    (a) No person shall possess ammunition in the District of Columbia unless:

    (1) He is a licensed dealer pursuant to subchapter IV of this unit;

    (2) He is an officer, agent, or employee of the District of Columbia or the United States of America, on duty and acting within the scope of his duties when possessing such ammunition;

    (3) He is the holder of the valid registration certificate for a firearm of the same gauge or caliber as the ammunition he possesses; except, that no such person shall possess restricted pistol bullets; or

    (4) He holds an ammunition collector?s certificate on September 24, 1976.

    (b) No person in the District shall possess, sell, or transfer any large capacity ammunition feeding device regardless of whether the device is attached to a firearm.

Here is the segment of today?s Meet the Press show in which Gregory holds up what appears to be a high-capacity (i.e., more than 10 round) ammunition clip while interviewing Wayne LaPierre this morning:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

I sent Gregory a tweet, and I?ll try to reach out to NBC News, and I?ll update if I can get NBC?s position on whether Gregory just violated the law. Maybe it was just a dummy clip, not a real one:

Update 5:15 p.m. ? It has been 4 hours since I emailed the two communications people at NBC News with responsibility for Meet the Press, and almost two hours since I emailed the S.V.P. of Communications and left a voice mail on her cell phone, but no response yet from NBC News.

'Jersey Shore' finale filled with pranks, tears

    By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

    Ian Spanier / MTV

The cast of "Jersey Shore" said so long on Thursday night's series finale.

This is it -- the very last episode of "Jersey Shore" ever. Sigh. Before we had to say our goodbyes to Sitch, Snooki, Pauly D, Sammi, Ronnie, Vinny, Deena and JWoww, the group put together one of their biggest parties to-date with a bonfire on the beach.

Between getting the hard wood (which Vinny was great at doing), carrying all the supplies down to the beach and making a fire, creating this farewell party was not easy, but everyone's friends and families joined in, which made it all worth it.

Fun fact: If Jionni was about three feet taller and 100 pounds heavier, he could play on the NFL. Boy's got some football skills, and even outran Mike, who was in "the best shape of my life." Or so he said (time and time again).

The next day was their last work day at the Shore Store. It was bittersweet and somber, but Snooki said she wouldn't mind if Lorenzo worked there, so maybe he'll be pressin' shirts someday, too.

Meanwhile, Paula, the girl that Mike played mind games with for three summers, left a card and cake for her ex to celebrate his upcoming birthday. Super sweet, but c'mon, girl, what were you thinking? He doesn't deserve that. However, we found out she had an ulterior motive. Stay tuned.

The Jersey Shore gang "definitely ready to move on"

In an attempt to get Sammi back for her "prank" of locking the guys out upstairs, Vin and Pauly decided to take Ron's air mattress and put it outside, except they committed the ultimate fail: Vinny accidentally popped the mattress. And you should know, Ronnie cared about that mattress more than anything in the world.

They rushed to put it back in the room, hoping the couple wouldn't find out what happened. When Ron and Sam got back, they thought the prank was just deflating the bed. Poor Ronnie tried to fill it back up with air for forever. In the end, he got mad at Sam for pulling her "lame" prank in the first place. Vinny with the win.

The next day was the Fourth of July and celebration of Mike's and Pauly's birthdays. There was cake, fireworks and a dramatic movie starring Ron and Sam. It had been a while since we've seen one of those. Ronnie still wasn't over the bed situation and wanted Sam to apologize, but she felt she didn't do anything wrong. As with all of their fights, it quickly escalated to them saying they should just break up.

21 things we've learned from Jersey Shore

Don't worry, they didn't. Instead, Ron and Sam just said sorry, kissed and made up. Whew!

Remember how we said Paula was up to something with that cake? So, during their GTL sesh on the last day, the group went tanning and Paula's coworker at the salon asked Mike's roomies (while he was in the tanning bed) if they ate the cake. Everyone said no, since only Mike, Deena and Pauly ate some, and she shared a photo taken of some guy putting his testicles on the cake. Yup, that happened.

Is Paula the new prank war champion? We think so.

Mike tried to call Paula to confront her about that situation, but she kept pretending she couldn't hear him. That apparently got Sitch really P.O.'d, because he threw the duck phone on the ground and smashed it. No! Not the duck phone! RIP.

    Read last week's recap!

Their last night together was spent with everyone gathered on the deck to reminisce and reflect on all the memories they've created since season one -- from using the hot tub the first night, to Snooki getting punched in the face by a guy at the bar, to Pauly and Jenni's hookup, to welcoming Deena into the house.

    Grab the Kleenex.

Alas, bags were packed and loaded into cars, and tearful goodbyes were said (yeah, even Mike cried), and that was it.

    Peace out, Seaside.

Putting Financial Data in the Cloud | Articles | FutureGov ...

    Government Cloud

Bobby Nazief, Special Adviser at Indonesia?s Ministry of Finance talks to FutureGov about the current transitional period in Indonesia?s long term plan to consolidate all of its financial information and infrastructure in the?cloud.

    From this Section

    Consolidating IT?Systems

The challenge is how to integrate our IT systems. We started last year by consolidating infrastructure into the cloud. We plan to finish this stage by the middle of next year and continue with systems integration. We are in the middle of a transition. The IT system is serving the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to manage national budget, revenue collection, taxes and custom excise. However, each unit has its own IT system and?infrastructure.

The value of the national budget that we are managing is 1300 trillion IDR (US$30 billion); tax: 1000 trillion IDR (US$23 billion). If there are any issues with the system, it means that there is a potential problem with disbursement of the budget, and in revenue collection. The Finance Minister saw a centralised IT system as a big advantage in terms of quality IT management and quality of service among different?units.

    Financial Management?System

The contract was signed back in 2009 and we have since had the Oracle E-business Suite (EBS) that handles the budget management from authorisation, disbursement, tax management to reporting. The EBS system is also supported by Hyperion Budget Planning. The scope is budget preparation, disbursement, and reporting. We plan to add fixed asset management, debt management and integrate these to support the fiscal system of the?MoF.

When we started the centralisation project, we didn?t know how many systems and data we could consolidate. We focused on the infrastructure and when it was ready, we asked ourselves whether we wanted to replicate what we already had. We realised that the cloud provided a better solution and we didn?t have to move the physical system. All we had to move were applications, which enabled us to allocate the physical infrastructure more?efficiently.

Initially, the cloud helped us consolidate this infrastructure, and now we are planning to ramp up cloud utilisation and move to Platform-as-a-Service. We provide the infrastructure in the centralised data centre, while the responsibility of managing the IT system is still with the specific unit. It is very much like the concept of the cloud: the owner of the system is still the individual unit, but they don?t have to worry about the infrastructure as the central IT unit is providing?it.

The issue is budgeting. Each unit is responsible for its own budget. How can you coordinate it when the system is managed by one unit, while the output will be obtained by another?unit?

We have plenty of knowledge but to provide top quality service, we do limited outsourcing. We engage experts from the private sector to work with our people for a limited time, to expedite an exchange of expertise and?knowledge.

We are aiming at finishing the consolidation next year and move all the hardware to one server room or data centre. We will also complete the rollout of the budgeting system by end of this?year.

Insurer Aviva sells U.S. unit for $1.8 billion

LONDON (Reuters) - Aviva , Britain's No. 2 insurer, has agreed to sell its U.S. business for $1.8 billion, far less than it paid for it and the biggest disposal so far in a reorganization aimed at boosting its underperforming share price.

Aviva USA Corporation, a provider of life insurance and annuities, is being bought by Athene Holding, a specialist life insurer majority-owned by U.S. private equity company Apollo, Aviva said on Friday.

The sale price is below the $2.9 billion that Aviva paid for the U.S. business in 2006, but the insurer said the deal would make it financially stronger by reducing capital requirements and cutting its exposure to volatile credit investments.

Aviva's economic capital surplus - the amount by which its capital reserves exceed its requirements - will rise by 1.1 billion pounds ($1.79 billion), the company said.

"The disposal of the U.S. business represents a successful end to the year and sets us up well for 2013," Aviva chairman John McFarlane said in a statement.

Aviva shares were down 0.5 percent by 5:55 a.m. ET, against a 0.8 percent fall in the STOXX 600 European insurance share index <.sxip>. The stock has risen 27 percent since the start of the year, lagging a 33 percent gain for the sector.

The U.S. sale forms part of a plan launched by Aviva in July to sell or close 16 businesses that tie up over a third of the insurer's capital while contributing just 18 percent of operating profit.

Aviva has so far also jettisoned part of its stake in Dutch insurer Delta Lloyd as well as its entire share of Aseval, a Spanish joint venture with Bankia .

The reorganization, drawn up by McFarlane, came after investors forced out chief executive Andrew Moss, who had overseen a 60 percent fall in Aviva's share price during his five-year tenure.

Mark Wilson, formerly chief executive of Asian life insurer AIA, takes over the top job at Aviva on January 1, the insurer said last month.

Aviva USA accounted for about 9 percent of Aviva's total operating profit last year. Proceeds from the sale will be $1.55 billion once debt is repaid, Aviva said.

Child Gun Deaths Nationwide Number Nearly 6 Newtown Massacres

Police reports about the final moments of Demetrius Cruz?s life include the kind of information that is at once difficult to fathom and yet somehow part of the ordinary but tragic tapestry of life in the U.S.

Cruz was riding in a car with his cousin on a Denver street Saturday when the driver of a white car started bumping, following and then chasing the teens' car. Cruz called his aunt. He was scared. Someone in the white car fired several shots, striking and killing Cruz. He was just 15 years old. That same night in Kansas City, Mo., a bullet sliced through the body of 4-year-old Aydan Perea while he was sitting in a car with his dad. Police say Perea was the innocent and unsuspecting victim of a gang drive by. Days later, on Tuesday, Dalton Williams, 16, was killed in Pierre, S.D. with a shotgun wielded by a friend after a dispute over a paintball game.

In each case, local newspapers and television stations captured the shocking and sad details. But no national media camped outside the boys' homes, schools or places of worship. No satellite trucks were driven in to beam the faces of these human sacrifices to America?s gun violence problem abroad. The president did not call to offer his condolences. Nor did he come to town to give a speech. And no professional athletes sent their jerseys or spoke publicly about the boys' deaths.

Beyond their families and friends, the deaths of Cruz, Perea and Williams and the hundreds of others like them across the country this year went largely unnoticed. The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. a week ago left 20 children and six adults dead, and millions of Americans distraught and, in some cases, interested anew in a conversation about gun control.

Cruz, Perea and Williams are just another string of child shooting victims whose deaths somehow seem not uncommon because they happened one at a time. Together though, child shooting fatalities in the U.S. last year alone amounted to more than two dozen Sandy Hook massacres -- and the country has scarcely reacted.

In 2011, guns were used to murder 8,583 people living in the U.S., according to the most recent FBI data available. Among those murdered by guns, there were 565 young people under the age of 18, and 119 children ages 12 or younger -- the latter number nearly equivalent to six Newtown mass shootings. And these figures include only homicides.

?It?s staggering,? said Lindsay Nichols, an attorney with the California-based pubic interest law firm and gun-control advocacy organization the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. ?We are all shocked by the news in Newtown, Conn., but when you think about it, it is equally tragic and equally horrific every day so many families suffer this loss and that every year there are so many funerals of children that family members have to attend.?

Just Tuesday, Paul Samplteton Sr. found the body of his 14-year-old son, Paul Sampleton Jr., bound and shot dead in the family?s Grayson, Ga. home. Police suspect the boy may have interrupted a robbery. The Sampleton family will mark a very different kind of Christmas this year, then bury their son next Friday.

Then there are the stories of children killed in gun accidents and suicides. In 2010, the most recent year for which detailed Centers for Disease Control data is available, 129 people between the ages of 1 and 19 died in gun accidents. Another 749 took their own lives using a firearm, most of which were owned by a parent.

This year, in the days leading up to the mass shooting in Newtown, 12-year-old Demetri Phillips was shot and killed by a friend while playing with a gun in their shared home on Dec. 6. Two days later, Craig Allen Loughrey, 7, died in a gun store parking lot. His father?s gun went off inside the family truck and struck the boy, strapped into a booster seat, in the chest.

The problem isn?t exactly new. In 1997, the Centers for Disease Control found that in the U.S. the rate of death among children 15 and under due to gunshot wounds was nearly 12 times higher than those in 15 other developed countries. Child deaths caused by guns have dropped since that time, along with other types of crime.

But the number of children and teens killed in 2008 and 2009 in the U.S. alone could fill 229 classroom with 25 students, according to a report released by the Children?s Defense Fund this year. In 2009, of all the people 18 and under that died due to a firearm injury of any kind, 43 percent were black and 20 percent were Latino, making gun violence a disproportionately common event among teens of color, according to the Children's Defense Fund report.

On Friday, National Rifle Association vice president Wayne LaPierre proposed a program that would put armed guards and perhaps other adults with guns in every school, saying ?good guys? with firearms were the surest way to protect the nation?s children.

Nichols, of the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, described the NRA?s proposal as preposterous.

?I think it?s an absurd and dangerous idea,? Nichols said. ?But as with so many of their proposals I think its real aim is to encourage the sale of more firearms. The biggest donors to the NRA are firearms manufacturers. Besides, arming and equipping all these people he wants to put in schools, having guns where kids see them daily is a tool to market weapons to the next generation.?

Apps like Shopkick provide customers with location-based rewards no matter where they are.

Macy?s is also offers savings with their app and/or through SMS text integration. Customers simply text APP or JOIN to a short code and they are instantly opted in to insider deals, sales and discounts.

Don?t think they forgot about you, website shoppers. As always, free shipping and other perks are found throughout the website. Sign up for emails and get 15% off on top of great deals in addition to providing opportunities for marketers to communicate with loyal customers.

    Social and Gamification

Macy?s fans are also encouraged to get on Facebook ?to learn about in-store events, check out the latest trends, sales and exclusive offers, and participate in instant win games and sweepstakes. Macy?s gamification component isn?t as robust as other retailers who have really gone no holds barred with badges, leaderboards, etc., but enough to entice even the least game savvy shopper.

Macy?s has saturated every channel to ensure that customers can access Macy?s anytime, anywhere. After reviewing the top retailers, Macy?s really out did itself, excelling past Target and Best Buy in Omnichannel utilization. From social media, to mobile, to location based and e-commerce rewards, Macy?s omnichannel marketing goes above and beyond.

Macy?s has an opportunity to integrate these elements into their existing Macy?s Star Rewards loyalty program and reward customers for utilizing the various channels, thus gaining valuable insight into customer behaviors while developing their consumer relationships further. By having silo-ed channels, they could be missing out on communication and retention strategies than they would with a more integrated solution. I look forward to seeing how Macy?s will maintain and evolve their current omnichannel strategy. As Charles Dickens once said, ?I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.?
