Allen Park ? Just when you thought the Lions' coaching staff was set.
Tim Walton, the highly regarding secondary coach, is leaving. He has accepted the job as defensive coordinator for the Rams, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Walton, who had interviewed with the Rams before last season, as well, beat out Dick Jauron and Mike Singletary. The job initially went to Rob Ryan, but he and head coach Jeff Fisher had irreconcilable schematic differences.
The Lions had given Walton additional duties last season, putting him in charge of third-down packages. They brought in Marcus Robertson to work with the safeties while Walton handled the cornerbacks.
It remains to be seen how the Lions will adjust. Robertson could take over the secondary and defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham could go back to making all the defensive calls. Or they could hire a replacement for Walton.
Walton, 41, was the defensive coordinator for two years, at the University of Memphis (2007) and the University of Miami (2008).
In 14 college seasons, nine players he coached were drafted in the first or second round and all but one (Devin Hester) were defensive backs: LaRon Landry, Brandon Meriweather, Kenny Phillips and Antrel Rolle among them.
