Seattle Mayor's Race Debate To Feature All Nine Candidates Ahead Of Primary

The Downtown District Council of Seattle and KCTS 9 will host the nine Seattle mayoral candidates for a live debate ahead of the August 6 primary. The first hour of the debate will be televised and simulcast? on KUOW starting at 7:00 p.m. Following the first hour, an additional half hour of debate time will continue online only at KCTS 9.

The debate will feature questions on transportation, public safety, police accountability, coal trains and legalized marijuana. All nine candidates are expected to take part and the discussion will be moderated by Enrique Cerna of KCTS 9 and Joni Balter, Seattle Times assistant political editor.

KUOW's Deborah Wang reported from the contentious CityClub of Seattle debate?on Tuesday. ?The evening started with fireworks when candidate Kate Martin was escorted from the stage. CityClub had not extended an invitation for her to take part in the debate and instead chose five of the nine mayoral candidates that were determined to be ?most viable,? according to executive director Diane Douglas.

The tension continued through the debate with bickering and accusations flying. Balter moderated the CityClub event as well.

Earlier this week, KUOW interviewed all nine candidates during midday programming. You can listen to them and follow the coverage of the mayor's race and others at our elections page.
