Caio Ibelli, Davey Cathels and Matt Pagan advance to Round 2 at San Miguel Pro Zarautz

Brazil?s Caio Ibelli, Australia?s Davey Cathels and America?s Matt Pagan secured their place in their second round (Round of 96) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after walking away with top honours from their respective Round 1 (Round of 144) heats that went down at Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Tuesday, August 28.

Reunion Island?s Hugo Dubosc, Australia?s Jerome Forrest and America?s Cory Arrambide made the Round 2 cut as well after managing to get hold of second place in their respective heats.

The day promised to deliver a heavy dose of thrilling action as some of the best surfing talent from around the globe converged to the exotic Zarautz, ready to show what they are made of in clean one-to-two foot waves.

The fourth heat of Round 1 saw Ibelli take on Dubosc, Portugal?s Justin Mujica and local talent Julen Egiguren for the Round 2 spot.

The Brazilian surfer got off to a relatively slow start, but he continued to build momentum and eventually unleashed a flurry of exquisite tricks in the final minutes of the heat to post a 7.50 and 7.10 on the score-board, thus finishing with a ?heat-total of 14.60 points.

Dubosc scored a 5.17 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with an additional 5.67 points in the final minutes of the heat, thus clinching second place with a heat-total of 10.84 points.

Mujica finished in third place with a two-wave total of 9.67 points, while Egiguren had to settle for bottom-place after registering a heat-total of 8.07 points. Both the surfers were consequently eliminated from the competition.

Cathels got the better of his compatriot Forrest, Reunion Island?s Frederic Robin and Venezuela?s Denny Mendoza in the fifth heat to get his place confirmed in the next round.

The Australian powerhouse scored a 6.33 off his first business-wave and backed it up with an impressive 7.00-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 13.33 points.

Forrest successfully made the Round 2 cut as well after scoring a 4.33 and 3.53 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 7.86 points, a score that proved sufficient to earn him second place.

Robin and Mendoza got removed from the contention for the event title after finishing with a heat-total of 5.86 and 4.36 points respectively.

The sixth heat of Round 1 saw Pagan claim top honours after scoring a 5.13 off his first business-wave and backing it up with an impressive 7.27 points to finish with a heat-total of 12.40 points.

Arrambide finished behind his fellow countryperson in second place after reaping a 5.77 and 6.57 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 12.34 points, thus accompany Pagan into the next round.

Portugal?s Jose Ferreira and his compatriot Eduardo Fernandes were forced to make a quick exit from the competition due to their bottom-two finish following a heat-total of 11.84 and 9.87 points respectively.
